Foggy headlights can be a major problem for a car owner. While it may not seem like a big deal, they reduce visibility at night, which can increase your risk for accidents. The really sad part about this is that fixing foggy headlights is actually pretty simple and something you can most often accomplish on your own. We’re always trying to help our customers and so here are some tips on how to fix your foggy headlights.
Why Do Foggy Headlights Happen?
Foggy headlights are a problem related to the materials used in manufacturing the light covers. Originally, these covers were made of glass, but the material was switched to plastic in order to save money and reduce more common problems associated with breaking glass. Due to certain chemicals used in the manufacturing process, these plastic covers are prone to yellowing and fogging over time.
How Can I Repair My Car Headlights?
Doing anything with your car can seem really stressful to a car owner, but it doesn’t have to be. The truth is that there are a couple of good cleaning methods you can apply yourself with common household items. These solutions are only temporary, and you will need to find a more permanent solution, but they will extend the life of your headlights for some time.
Baking Soda
Wash your headlights with soap and water. Take a mixture of baking soda and water (there is no perfect ratio, but you want it to be paste-like in consistency) and apply it gently with a dry rag. Wash it off and reveal your results.
Toothpaste
Cleaning your headlights with toothpaste is actually a very popular DIY remedy. Simply clean your headlights with soap and water, dry them, and then apply some masking tape to the edges to protect your car. Next, spray your headlight with a soapy water solution. Apply toothpaste to a cloth and gently scrub. Rinse off and apply a coat of wax.
These solutions are both only temporary fixes, and you will eventually need to seek out a more permanent solution. If none of these solutions work, your headlights may be damaged beyond a simple fix and require you to seek a professional to help replace them.
