The holidays are a time of celebration, fellowship, and travel. Unfortunately, it’s also a time for a lot of accidents as well. Did you know that over 70% of the roads in the United States are in snowy regions? More concerning is the fact that over 100,000 accidents will occur in regions like those every year because of winter driving conditions. We don’t think anyone should have to deal with an accident over the holidays, so we put together these winter driving safety tips to help you on your travels.

Slow is Fast

When driving in winter conditions, such as ice and snow, one of the biggest dangers is the greatly reduced traction on the roads. The single best way to deal with these conditions, if you have to drive, is to slow down. Keep your speed lower, brake and accelerate more slowly. It will take more time in all of these cases and reducing your speed will help you stop, go, and avoid a dangerous skid.

Keep in Touch

When you’re heading out in winter conditions, especially if you’re visiting friends and family, make sure someone knows you’re travel plans. This is true even when driving in a town, or similarly small geographical area. If people know when to expect you, and where you’re going, they will be better able to get help should you fall out of contact in potentially extreme weather conditions. If you’re out and plans change, as they do, simply call and update everyone so they know. An ounce of prevention is a powerful thing.

When in Doubt, Don’t Go Out

If you’re not sure of your ability to drive in the conditions you’re facing, don’t. It’s just that simple. Stay in where you are warm and safe. You cannot be a danger to yourself or others if you are waiting out conditions in a home or hotel. This isn’t the time for pride, it’s the time for safety and a happy holiday. Trust us, it’s not worth it.
