For a little more than a year we’ve been mostly locked down and restricted in our travel capabilities. Some of us didn’t travel very far at all, staying home and making the best of it, while others took the time to find new ways to travel and enjoy some sites closer to home. Now with vaccines being distributed and travel destinations announcing plans for reopening, it looks like we might be getting back to some kind of normal. We’re not there yet though and, if your travel itch hasn’t been scratched yet, we have some ideas for you. Take a look at these four amazing SC driving trips and start planning an adventure.

Ashley River Road

Our first trip suggestion is one that’s close to home as well as one of the most magical drives in the country. With both Drayton Hall and Magnolia Plantations and Garden on this route, the live oak tree canopy that covers a historic 11.5-mile stretch of the road is a site in the Lowcountry you shouldn’t miss. Conveniently located close to home, this one is ideal for a day outing in the early days of spring.

Edisto Scenic Byway

This one is a short, two-lane road (on a section of S.C. 174) that will take you through a brilliantly preserved section of the Lowcountry and its natural beauty. Saltmarsh, maritime forests, and creeks are interspersed with roadside fruit and vegetable stands as well as historic buildings, making it a perfect exploration adventure for the whole family.

Cherokee Foothills Byway

If you’re looking to get out of the Lowcountry for a bit, we suggest checking out the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Byway (S.C. 11). Starting at the SC border with Georgia around Lake Hartwell, you will drive through the beautiful rolling hills of the Piedmont as you make your way towards Gaffney. Table Top State Park provides an incredible place to stop along the route, stretch your legs and explore more of South Carolina’s natural beauty.

Oscar Wigington Scenic Byway

This byway doesn’t sound impressive with a total length of only 20 miles. However, it boasts some of the Upstate’s most beautiful views and several must-see attractions. While driving the winding roads enjoy visits to Moody Spring, the Chattooga River, Walhalla Fish Hatchery, and plenty of scenic waterfalls.
